Sample a fine wine at your table

The Hunter Valley has some of the best Australia has to offer. Just two hours north of Sydney, you'll find sparkling waterways, rugged mountains, forests and fascinating towns reflecting colonial heritage. Lake Macquarie (74 miles north of Sydney) is Australia's largest coastal lake. Just one and a half hour's drive from Sydney, you will find excellent lakeside accommodation, broad ocean beaches and estensive forests.

Newcastle (111 miles north) is a maritime city, originally founded in 1797 as a penal colony and is Australia's second oldest city. You can discover its outstanding beaches, fascintating harbour and historic sites on a 45 minute tour aboard "The Famous Tram". Visit historic Fort Scatchley which houses the Maritime Museum. Close to the city is Blackbutt Reserve with its excellent koala exhibits.

Port Stephens (129 miles north) is acknowledged as the most popular and spectacular holiday resort on the east coast. With pearly white beaches, crystal clear water and its natural bushland, the shores abound in native flora and fauna. Its most famous residents are the families of dolphins who follow the cruise boats in the port and the koalas in the wild at the Tiigerry Habitat. Join an exciting off-road adventure over the towering sand dunes to the wild and pristine 20 mile Stockton Beach with a huge shipwreck.

Hunter Valley Wine Country is Australia's oldest wine producing area. Here are some of Australia's most famous wineries sprouting throughout the backroads of the beautiful hills near Cessnock. You can take a horse-drawn carriage, soar in a hot balloon or leisurely cycle through beautiful and peaceful countryside. The guest houses and restaurants match the excellence of the wines.

Maitland (101 miles north) is acclaimed as on of Australia's most spectacular heritage cities. Nearby is the historic old river port town of Morpeth, almost unchanged since the 1850's.

Gateway to the nearby Barrington Tops National Park is Dungog (25 miles north). In the forests you will find several excellent wilderness resorts in lush forest settings with abundant wildlife including kangaroos, lorikeets and echidna. There are rainforests with walking trails and you can enjoy horseback riding and 4wd tours.

The rich hills of the Upper Hunter present opportunities for discovering the essence of Australia's heritage. The Scone area (167 miles north) offers wineries, horse studs, farm stays and a wealth of outdoor adventures.
