Salamanca Place, adjacent to the Constitution Dock in the city center, features beautifully preserved sandstone warehouses from the cities first settlement, speciality shops, arts and crafts, cafes and restaurants. The Salamanca Markets are held every Saturday morning and are renowned for their local craft and fresh produce.

Hobart caters to all tastes when dining out, from takeaway meals to sophisticated restaurants specializing in famous seafoods and other delectable dishes. Wilderness Experience

Tasmania has many national parks, several that are included on the world heritage list. Visit Freycinet National Park with its magnificent coastal scenery, red granite outcrops, bushwalking, birdwatching, boating and fishing. Tasmania’s south west is a true pristine wilderness and the State intends to keep it that way. In the central west, cross Cradle Mountain to Queenstown, Strahan and Zeehan where the first white settlers hunted down and shot the last aboriginal woman remaining in early Tasmania many years ago. The east coast is Tasmania's summer playground

Beyond the City

16 miles north of Hobart is the historic village of Richmond where you can see old stone bridges built by Australia’s most desperate convicts who were sent to Tasmania from the mainland. See old stone buildings, galleries museums and craft shops.

Port Arthur, 62 miles south east of Hobart, is the site of the colony’s main penal settlement between 1830 and 1877. Many buildings have been preserved to show the life of the era. Tour the maximum penal jail and there is an after dark tour by lamplight.

Sitting in the Tamar Valley, 123 miles north of Hobart. is Launceston, Tasmania's second largest city. A mile from the town, Australia's oldest operating woollen mills are found at Waverly. Don't miss the Cataract Gorge, a nature reserve with good swimming and walking trails along the banks of the Esk River. Cross the gorge by suspension bridge or take a ride across on the cable car. Near the Gorge entrance is Penny Royal World, an extensive complex that includes 19th century water, corn and wind mills. A paddlesteamer takes visitors on the Esk river and through Cataract Gorge.

The Launceston Country Club Casino Resort is often the starting point for trips to many interesting places as it is the closest city to where the Spirit of Tasmania, a ocean going passenger/vehicular ferry docks at Devonport, located on the central north coast of Tasmania. The Casino Resort offers accommodation, restaurants, bars, conference center, gaming and outdoor activities such as a first class 18 hole golf course.
