Barrier Reef Islands
An area of great beauty, featuring 74 islands just north of Mackay, offering superb boating and coral viewing. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels and resorts to campsites. A wide range of charter vessels operates to the Whitsunday Islands from the holiday centres at Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. Townsville, the business centre of North Queensland, is located 851 miles/1371 km north of Brisbane. Visit the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland, Billabong Sanctuary and the Sheraton Breakwater Casino.
The most southern island of the Whitsundays. South Molle Island is the largest of the North, Mid and South Molle Island Group and the only one with a resort. Located eight kilometres north-east of Shute Harbour, South Molle is a very picturesque, hilly continental island with undulating grasslands, lush pockets of rainforest, secluded bays and fringing reefs. The Island's greatest asset is the white sand beach and pale blue waters. The Resort provides almost everything and there are optional island hopping and Barrier Reef tours available. Beachcomber Units feature a colour television, mini bar, air conditioning, STD/IDD phone, tea/coffee making facilities, iron and ironing board, en-suite and private balcony or patio. Rooms have one queen size bed and a double futon and also include a luxurious spa bath. Beachcomber units are all individual and room layouts may vary from unit to unit. Hamilton Island offers its guests a very extensive range of over 40 activities on a daily basis. These include Great Barrier Reef cruises, waterskiing, windsurfing, catamaran and yacht sailing, tennis, gymnasium, game fishing, nature walks, whale watching, (mid July to September), scenic flights, safari tours or simply just relaxing by one of the six resort pools. For couples, The 5 star Beach Club is a beach front boutique style hotel with uninterrupted views of the Coral Sea. The Reef View Hotel offers panoramic Coral Sea views from the balconies of some of the largest hotel rooms in the South Pacific. A wide range of 1, 2, 3 & 4 bedroom Apartments, all with full kitchen facilties, are perfect for large groups and families. The Palm Bungalows and Terrace provide affordable accommodation set amongst Hamilton Islands tropical gardens. There are launch cruises from Hamilton Island to Daydream Island that is just one kilometre long and half a kilometre wide. Daydream is always popular with day visitors as it is only a short ride from the mainland. Hayman Island is one of the world's finest resorts. It is also the closest resort to the Great Barrier Reef with helicopter or cruiser transport giving guests the opportunity for coral viewing or diving. Big game fishermen come to Hayman in the months of September, October and November in search of Black Marlin. Brampton Island is famous as an international tourist resort and is also an important national park. It has an abundance of native bush and bird life, seen from a variety of safe walking tracks which cross the Island. There is a lookout with panoramic views over the Whitsundays and six secluded sandy beaches. Premium Ocean View Rooms are located right on the beach and offer the best accommodation views on the island. Ocean View Rooms are spacious and comfortable with modern furnishings and splashes of colour giving these rooms a relaxed beachside feel. Palm Rooms are light-filled with bright interiors and comfortable appointments. The rooms have a tropical outlook, some with water glimpses and each with private balcony or outdoor area overlooking lush gardens. Carlisle Rooms are compact and comfortable. Interiors are bright with a tropical theme and each room has a small private balcony or patio offering views to neighbouring Carlisle Island. Hook is rugged and a true wilderness island. Hook Peak, at 459 metres, is the highest mountain on the Island. One of the few walking tracks leads to Butterfly Bay, named so because of its unique shape and the butterflies which swarm around its shores. The observatory on Hook Island allows visitors to descend nine metres below the ocean to view coral, reef animals and plants in their own habitat. There are marine biologists on hand to explain the wonders of the reef. Long Island is close to the mainland and one of the prettiest Whitsunday Islands. The Island is a national park with 13 kilometres of graded walking tracks across the Island, leading to beautiful secluded beaches and dense bush areas. There are three established resorts on the Island, Palm Bay Hideaway, Club Crocodile Long Island and Whitsunday Wilderness Lodge.
Heron Island is an idyllic coral cay located right on the Great Barrier Reef. Swim straight off the beach to an endless garden of coral where waters are teeming with beautiful marine life. The Beach House offers a superior style of accommodation with a high degree of privacy. Set within a grove of trees, a private boardwalk provides access to the beach. Set in a premium beachfront position with an outlook that offers uninterrupted reef views and magical sunsets, Point Suites are Heron's superior grade of accommodation. Offering absolute beach frontage with direct access to the water and views of the reef, Heron Beachside Suites are generous in size with villa-style inclusions. Dunk Island is Australia's most beautiful tropical rainforest island. This island of peace and plenty offers an amazing variety of activities, facilities and experiences.
