King Island lies in the path of the Roaring Forties, the ever-present westerlies that circle the world’s southern latitudes. It’s an island of long, empty beaches and clean, fresh air. It’s an island of offshore reefs, rocky coasts, lighthouses and shipwrecks. Australia’s worst maritime disaster occurred here in 1845, when the Cataraqui grounded. Today, Cape Wickham, the tallest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere, guides mariners safely into Bass Strait. You can explore the island’s most important historic sites on the Shipwreck Trail.

Reid Rocks is a major breeding colony for the Australian fur seal. King Island’s wildlife, both native and exotic, can sometimes surprise - yes, that was a pheasant you saw in the roadside hedge. And yes, it is a paddock of grazing turkeys.

European history began with maritime explorers, sealers, hunters, shipwrecked castaways and great-hearted farmers. Prospectors discovered tin, gold, rutile, ilmenite and one of the world's largest deposits of scheelite. Soldier settlement schemes after two world wars "tamed" the land for farmers who, in time, found that regular rainfall and year-long green pastures were ideal for growing sheep, quality beef and the dairy cows from whose milk they could make wonderous cheeses. An island of fine foods and friendly people!

You may prefer to stay at Curries Motel and friendly Pub. You can visit the King Island Dairies shop next to the cheese factory; taste the cheeses and select your favourites to take home. (Don’t miss the amazing Roaring Forties Blue!). Wallabies and peacocks abound and Shearwater rookeries pepper tussocky coastal hillsides. You may sight albatrosses and mighty sea eagles riding the up-draughts
