Melbourne Golf

Bernard Langer, USPGA and European PGA tour player, commented on the US Golf Channel, "these courses (Melbourne sand-belt) are probably the best selection of golf courses in the world." Vacation Australia's Golf Professional, Kelly Robertson, has first hand playing experience and agrees with Bernard. They are also very prestigious and private. It is not possible to play these courses on the weekends as they are private golf courses and members take priority with club competitions. International visitors are offered tee times on certain days and times and you must carry letter of introduction from your golf club to be eligible to play Melbourne's private courses.

Most of Melbourne's private sand belt courses are walk only. Caddies not available. Hand pulled buggies can be hired or you can carry your Sunday bag.

In Melbourne, play all year round. It does get blusterly through about a 6 week period in August and early September when the Southerly Winds blow and rain squalls are frequent.

The Mornington Peninsula

Excellent links golf can be played in the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria's holiday playground, located about a 1.75 hours drive south of Melbourne. Visitors are welcome weekdays and weekends. Motorized golf carts are available on most Peninsula courses.

Play Cape Schanck, a public Australian links course and the nearby Dunes Links, both Aussie favourite public links courses. Motorized golf carts available.

The National Golf Club now boasts three world class golf courses. The new Ocean course, designed by 5 time British Open winner, Peter Thompson, the new Moonah, designed by Greg Norman and their National Old Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr. The National Golf Club is a private member golf club and like the Melbourne sand-belt courses, international visitors should carry a letter of introduction from their club. Restricted visitor times apply preferably by invitation by a Club Member.

Better still, why not play the Australian Open Moonah Links while in the Peninsula. An 18 hole Championship Links golf course, designed by Peter Thomson (5 times British Open Champion), Wolveridge and Perrett, specifically to host the Nations' major golf event.
A natural stadium layout with wide undulating fairways of pure couch grass punctuated with pot bunkers, leading onto large multi-tiered greens make this course a true test for all levels of golfer. See the Mornington Peninsula

Golf & Wine

Kangaroo Kelly says, "The Peninsula is Australia's newest and fastest growing boutique wine district, featuring over 100 vineyards and 35 cellar door facilities, many of which include restaurants with breathtaking views over sea and countryside. When combined with its reputation for fine food and character accommodation, the Mornington Peninsula is attracting an ever-growing reputation for 'the good life'." See the National Wine Centre

IMelbourne & Peninsula Itinerary suggestion

Play Melbourne's private sand belt courses weekdays as these golf clubs stage member competitions on weekends. Make the 1.75 hour trip to the Mornington Peninsula to play on weekdays & weekends and where you have a choice of excellent resort and championship courses that include motorized golf cart availability.
