A must play course in Christchurch is the Christchurch Golf Club, commonly called "Shirley" that means in old English, a field of flowers.

Said to be the finest course in Canterbury, Shirley has recently been made even tougher with a Peter Thomson re-design. It still retains the links style flavour that led Deane Beman to pronounce it the best Eisenhower course in recent memory at the time of the 1990 event.
