Kiwi Golf
Boasting over 400 lush, green, uncrowded and beautifully maintained courses, set amidst the most magnificent and dramatic panoramas in the world, New Zealand truly is a golfer's paradise. Between its two major islands and what is probably the most incredible range of terrain - much of it on the hilly side of topography - New Zealand is one of the few countries that can emulate the demanding Scottish links.

Unusual hazards

Those planning a golfing vacation don't need to look very far. Courses are so prevalent in New Zealand, it's nearly impossible to travel more than 30 miles (50 kilometres) without coming across a well-maintained fairway. From typical Scottish-links-type courses along the coasts of both the North and South islands to courses situated against a breathtaking back~ drop of towering mountains and mirror lakes, New Zealand has something to suit any golfing personality. Plus a few extras ... .

Around 20 percent of this country is park land or protected forests, with niches to the north and vast areas in the more rugged south remaining untouched. Exploring the terrain and viewing wildlife in its natural habitat can be done easily and ecologically by foot, bike and kayak.

Aside from the usual hazards of sand traps and water, some New Zealand courses throw in a couple of extra goodies such as boiling mud pools and natural steam vents, and even the occasional sheep. There is, however, no cause for concern about the presence of less docile creatures or poisonous reptiles, which simply do not exist on the islands.

Some of the best

Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, overlooking the magnificent ocean dotted with islands and boats. The area is also the site of the historic signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the British and the Maori people. North of Pahia, you will find the premium Kauri Cliffs where world class links golf & 5 star Lodge accommodation is offered.

Auckland Premium Golf

The Muriwai golf links

Muriwai a true links course located on the west coast, approximately 40 minutes from Auckland. The black-sand beaches here provide stark contrast to the rich green color of the links.

Maungakiekie. The Club has undergone a multi-million dollar course redevelopment project where every hole has been re-modelled to incorporate the latest in modern design, construction and agronomy techniques. The master plan was devised by the Florida based Course Architect David Harman who developed the internationally regarded Kauri Cliffs complex in Matauri Bay, Northland NZ.

The Gulf Harbour Club House

The Gulf Harbour Country Club engaged the services of Robert Trent Jones Jr, arguably the worlds finest designer of classic golf courses. As his initial conception unfolded, it was known that Gulf Harbour had joined the ranks of his other masterpieces in numerous countries. Now completed and commanding spectacular views over the Hauraki Gulf, the 18 hole PGA standard golf course has already attracted world wide interest.

Play Other Auckland premium golf, Titirangi and The Grange, the established stars of the City of Sails.

Taupo

Wairakei

Wairakei International, named by American Golf Digest as one of the top 25 courses outside the United States. Located near Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, the course features the country's longest hole at 610 yards. Also in Taupo is the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course Kinlock, . Then travel southeast to play Cape Kidnappers, the sister links of Kauri Cliffs.

Wellington

The Paraparaumu Golf Links

The Paraparaumu Beach course, near Wellington, a fine links course offering length and tight fairways, with every shot tested by the winds off the Tasman Sea.

Christchurch

You must play Shirley and Russley, lying on the Canterbury Plains; the various flowers, shrubs and neatly manicured trees make these courses a delight to play.

Queenstown

Millbrook, a recent addition, located near Queenstown and designed by Bob Charles, New Zealand's own famous left-hander. Offering demanding but unhurried golf, the course weaves around natural waterways and is set against a stunning alpine backdrop.

The Kelvin Heights course in Queenstown, located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and nestled below the mighty Remarkables. The course is perched on a wooded peninsula extending into the lake - a golfer's and photographer's dream.

Dunedin

The Balmacewan, in contrast, is the oldest course in New Zealand. Opened in 1871 and situated in Dunedin, it is the pride of this "Edinburgh of the South," providing some great holes. St. Clair course offers impressive views of the Pacific.

If you have travelled this far south to Dunedin, travel just a little further to play the wonderful links Otatara in Invercargill.

Year round golf

The best time to golf in New Zealand is from October to April when temperatures range from the comfortable '60s to the high 70s, but, of course, golfing in New Zealand is year-round option. It is also a very affordable option, the New Zealand golfing scene being one of the least expensive in the world. And while New Zealand's world class courses have attracted many of the game's top players over years, including Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper and Nick Price, locals are always keen to meet visiting golfers of any level of expertise.

On the other hand, one should plan for two weeks and a well-organized itinerary in order to accommodate the best courses and all the various in-between-games activities. Nothing is easier or comes more naturally than to combine golf with some of New Zealand's other world-class activities such as fishing, trekking, flightseeing, skiing or wine-tasting. Golf courses are also often located in the vicinity of some of country's best lodges, allowing delightful gastronomy and a unique resort experience. Vacation Australia specializes in combining golf and sightseeing packages.

And, yes, golf carts are available at the major courses. But then a little walk wouldn't hurt, would it?
