City Highlights

Visit the Perth Mint to see how coins are made, witness a gold pour and mint a coin or medallion. Visit Kings Park, a popular picnic area with many walking trails and a 30 acre/12 hectare botanical garden, famous for its spring wildflowers. The Park is a pleasant walk from the city centre and is well serviced by public transport and the Perth Tram. Located in the city centre is the Art Gallery of Western Australia, housing a collection of Aboriginal art, Australian and international paintings and sculptures.

Perth enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia. Its warm sunny climate, clear blue skies and beautiful beaches are making it an increasingly popular destination with tourists.

International cuisine has its epicentre in Northbridge. Taste excellent Western Australian fish and seafood including freshwater lobster, king prawns and oysters. Beyond the City

Places of interest - Founded in 1829, Fremantle, 11 miles/18 km south-west of Perth, is a colourful busy port at the mouth of the Swan River, easily accessible by bus, train, ferry and taxi. Take a leisurely cruise from Barrack Street jetty to the Swan River wineries, Rottnest Island lies 11 miles/18 km off the coast of Fremantle. The island is known for its quokkas (small kangaroo like marsupials), beautiful beaches and clear waters teeming with marine life. Bicycles are the main form of transport. Ferry services leave from Fremantle and Perth. There are also flights from Perth. Avon valley, 62 miles/100 km east of Perth, is an agricultural area rich in spring wildflowers from September to November. Wildflower tours run from late August to late October.

Goldfields 373 miles/600 km east of Perth. Towns such as Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, and Kanowna struck it rich in the 1890's. Now, most are more ghost than gold although Kalgoorlie is the fastest growing gold producer in the world.
Visit the Museum of the Goldfields and historic Coolgardie. Take a Ghost Towns tour, a camel trek or a ride on the hour long commentary train around Kalgoorlie's golden mile. Daily air, coach and train services operate from Perth.

Discover the State's south

Known for its wineries, coastal scenery, surfing beaches and limestone caves at Margaret River. Don't miss the unique tree top walk near Walpole. Albany, a resort town and former whaling port located on the picturesque Princess Royal Harbour, 249 miles/409 km south -east of Perth. There is excellent estuary fishing and magnificent coastal scenery in the Torndirrup National Park.

Discover the State's North

Located in the Nambung National Park, north of Perth, are the Pinnacles - limestone pillars in the desert landscape. Further north is Shark Bay, a world heritage-listed area of great significence. Here is Monkey Mia, well known for its friendly dolphins which come to the shallows every day.

Rangers are on hand to supervise. Ningaloo Reef, 702 miles/1130 km north of Perth, is Australia's closest fringing reef and the focus of Ningaloo Marine Park. It can be reached by boat from Coral Bay and offers scuba diving or snorkelling. Semi submersible boats offer a close look at the reef without getting wet.

Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region, 870 miles/1400 km north of Perth, has ancient gorges and rugged ranges. Tour fascinating mine and port excursions to Tom Price, Newman and Dampier. The Kimberly, a vast region in the State's north, offers wild contrasts - from the pearling town of Broome to the spectacular gorges of west Kimberly and the rugged East Kimberly Ranges.

Visit the Argyle Diamond Mine, near Kununurra, the world's largest open cut diamond mine.

Getting Around

Public transport within the central city is free. The very popular CATS bus service travels on fixed east-west and north-south routes, guaranteeing the traveller's return to their point of boarding. Two major bus terminals and the central train station make public transport access to other suburbs in Perth an inexpensive and easy travel option.
