See the Birdsville Races website
Without question, this has to be one of Australia's most unique events. Birdsville is nothing more than a Pub, a general store, a caravan park and a few other outbuildings; its population is 326 people. That is for all the year excepting for the weekend of the Birdsville Races when the town's population swells to over 6000 people. Light and other aircraft are parked everywhere about the Pub and the bush race track. Many racegoers sleep under their aircraft, using the Town's public showers or the Caravan park showers. There are 9 cabins at the Caravan park, but other than that it is camping at the park or on the banks of the Diamantina River. Anybody who is anybody goes to the Birdsville Races. The event is held annually in the first week of September.

See Coober Pedy The Opal Capital of the world
Coober Pedy is where most of the world's most precious opals are mined. What an unusual town, located in the South Australian desert 536 miles/863 km from Adelaide. The summer heat is nigh unbearable. To escape the heat, most dwellings are underground and that includes an international hotel. Tour an opal mine, see opals being cut and buy as many opals as you want. Opal miners are hardened characters and you will be surprised at their remote and often hermit lifestyle. 1, 2 or 3 day trips suggested.

See White Cliffs Opal Field
Kangaroo Kelly says, "Many years ago, I had flown to Broken Hill from Sydney, then 4wdrived it to White Cliffs via Wilcannia. Some of the sights to be seen on this trip are embedded in my memory. I arrived in Wilcannia at about 9:30am to see about 10 Australian aborigines squatting in front of the hotel's corrugated iron fence, getting warm from the early morning sun while waiting for the "pub" to open at 10am.
Upon my arrival in White Cliffs, I discovered a movie being produced about a wild boar. The actor was Gregory Harrison. That was quite a shock to find such "goings on" in the middle of nowhere! After spending the night in the rough & ready hotel, I was treated to a really good old fashioned outback breakfast before wandering outside the front entrance to see a number of derelict hermit opal miners hanging about the hotel front, again waiting for the hotel to open at 10am. The liquor licencing laws did not allow hotels to open before 10am causing the thirsty miners to congregate about the hotel as it is obvious that many were alcoholics and desperate for a drink by that time in the morning.
Would you believe it, I was offered and purchased more than a pocketful of good quality opal from these desperados who were only to keen to make a cash sale to afford the cost of a drink or two or more.
Even more remarkable was the fact that my ill-gotten opals were valued at more than a return flight and a relaxing holiday anywhere in the world. I can tell you that if you buy right, know your opals and with a little bit of luck, you too have the opportunity to recoup the cost of your entire Australian holiday from the purchase of White Cliffs opal"

See King Island
King Island lies in the path of the Roaring Forties, the ever-present westerlies that circle the world’s southern latitudes. It’s an island of long, empty beaches and clean, fresh air. It’s an island of offshore reefs, rocky coasts, lighthouses and shipwrecks. Australia’s worst maritime disaster occurred here in 1845, when the Cataraqui grounded. Today, Cape Wickham, the tallest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere, guides mariners safely into Bass Strait. You can explore the island’s most important historic sites on the Shipwreck Trail.
Reid Rocks is a major breeding colony for the Australian fur seal. King Island’s wildlife, both native and exotic, can sometimes surprise - yes, that was a pheasant you saw in the roadside hedge. And yes, it is a paddock of grazing turkeys.
